NICHOLAS SHUMBERGER is a born artist.
From early childhood he exhibited an uncanny drawing skill and great control of 'line'. An ardent nature-lover, he was always dismayed to come across deceased animals in the countryside where he lived in the Manning Valley of New South Wales. Out of his compassion arose the impulse to collect their skulls and bones, bring them home, clean them off, and then proceed to draw them in incredibly accurate detail. After finishing High School, his artistic skills led him into the cosmetic make-up business in which he quickly rose to become top-selling make-up artist for Guerlain. Travelling overseas for the company led him to Asia, mainly China, where he achieved huge acclaim for his ability to 'westernise' Asian eyes, and his visits and demonstrations usually resulted in queues of eager women lining up for several blocks hoping to avail themselves of his skill.
Eventually the make-up and beauty business palled and Nicholas quit the company and Sydney to return to his home in the Manning Valley. There, in the peace and quiet, he began working on his first love - Art. Using his appreciation of anatomy he developed his own unique method of painting, incorporating the stylised skeletons of various creatures into his artworks. This, and his wonderful use of colour and contour, has resulted in some incredibly beautiful pictures, the value of which can only increase as time passes.
Apart from art on canvas, Nicholas has also created several pieces of magnificent installation work which are mystical in concept using mythical creatures and goddesses as his inspiration.
The opening night for Nicholas Shumberger's latest exhibition is Friday, April 20th, 2007 at the Manning Regional Art Gallery, Taree, NSW. The exhibition will run for three weeks and anyone interested in purchasing one of these unique works is urged to attend as soon as possible.
